Lightning in a Bottle 2013 is just around the corner and we’re very pleased to present acclaimed author, activist and economist, John Perkins, as one of of featured speakers at the Lucent Temple of Consciousness. The writer of the the internationally acclaimed and best-selling book, “Confessions of an Economic Hitman,” will be making his first appearance at LIB with a speech which will change the way you think of our planet and the role you play in it.
“I think we have entered a period which is the greatest revolution in the history of this world,” Perkins previewed of his LIB talk which is entitled, “Dreaming a New World, Economic Hitman and the Prophecies.” It’s a revolution of consciousness. In the last two months I have traveled all over the world on speaking tours and we’re really seeing people all over waking up to the fact that we’ve created a failed system on this planet, not just for human beings but for all living things and we have to change it.
“So I’ll be talking a lot about that and how we got to the system that’s now inferior and what we need to do to get beyond it,” Perkins continued. “Helping each person hear what they can personally do as an individual to be a part of this amazing revolution of consciousness that we are in.”
Confessions of an Economic Hitman
In Perkins’ breakthrough book “Confessions of an Economic Hitman” he boldly offered an unparalleled look at the immense greed and corruption in the modern era of globalization, which took him to new heights of popularity around the world. His most recent offering, “Hoodwinked: An Economic Hitman Reveals Why the World Financial Markets Imploded – and What We Need to Do to Remake Them,” delved deep into his own personal experiences from being a Chief Economist at a major international consulting firm where he advised the World Bank, United Nations, IMF, U.S. Treasury Department, as well as Fortune 500 companies and developing countries, which helped contribute to our current failed system of living.
“In the most recent book, what I really wanted to explore and share was my own personal experiences because I was very much a part of the system that has brought us into this failed global, economic, political and social mess that we’re in today,” explained Perkins, who became a founder and board member of Dream Change and The Pachamama Alliance, esteemed non-profit organizations devoted to creating a better world for our children to grow up in. “I was one of the soldiers in the trenches so to speak of this failed movement.”
He added, “When I say ‘failed,’ it’s a failed system for everyone on this planet except for the infamous 1%; the extremely rich and powerful. For everyone else it’s a very failed system. Less than 5% of us live in the United States and we consume almost 30% of the world’s resources. While half the world is starving or on the verge of starvation. That’s a failure, not a model. We can not repeat this in growing countries like India or Latin America or China. So we have to take a look at this failed system we’re currently in and change it.”
Dreaming a New World
At LIB, Perkins will also be outlining his solutions to fix this broken system and even though our planet has been pushed to the brink, Perkins maintains that he feels a positive change is indeed coming.
“I absolutely think it’s happening,” said Perkins. “It’s time we moved into a new phase and this is the phase that’s been prophesized for several thousand years. We’re waking up and people are speaking out. But what we really need to do is look at how we move from what I would call a ‘death autonomy,’ which is an autonomy based on warfare and destroying the planet’s resources, to a ‘life autonomy,’ which is one based on cleaning up the terrible pollution of this planet and also creating an economy that helps starving people grow food more efficiently, store it and distribute locally. An economy that also creates better forms of transportation and energy. So I think we have a tremendous opportunity right now to move from a death economy to a life economy and in the process we can create a lot of jobs for people that are interesting and rewarding.”
Perkins added, “The Dali Lama once told me when I was sitting in his living room with him that ‘It is important to pray for peace, to meditate on peace and to dream about peace but it’s also necessary to take action every single day to help to bring about peace.’”
It’s this continued quest for peace on our planet that will take Perkins to Lightning in a Bottle, where he hopes to inspire attendees to take action. As for what keeps him creatively inspired and going strong after all these years?
“Young people,” Perkins said with a hearty laugh. “I used to hear them say their goals were power and money. But today I don’t hear that anymore. I hear MBA student that are in business school tell me, ‘I want to have kids’ and ‘I want to create a better world; That’s why I am getting this degree.’ So over a pretty short period of time, I have seen an amazing change not only in the United States but everywhere. Young people are really understanding that we have to make a better world and that gives me great hope.”
