There’s only a few days left until we all come together at this year’s Lightning in a Bottle (LIB) festival! At the Lucent Temple of Consciousness, we are thrilled to present one of the most inspiring and accomplished American artists of our era, the visionary, Alex Grey. He will be teaming with his life partner and fellow acclaimed artist, Allyson, to trace generations of God seekers; offering attendees extraordinary visual illustrations of their inner journeys, including glimpses of Alex’s own art, while providing an unparalleled look into this emerging visionary culture. We spoke with Alex and Allyson ahead of their featured appearance at the Lucent Temple of Consciousness, where they offered a preview as to what attendees can look forwards to experiencing during their group workshop.
“It is a great honor to have been invited as Lightning in a Bottle has distinguished itself as a premier festival of art, music, dance, and wisdom,” said the Greys, who have called New York home since 1984 and are also the co-founders of The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, a non-profit church which supports visionary culture. ”It’s an immersive, visionary environment that catalyzes the creative evolutionary force needed in the 21st century.
They added, “The Do LaB seems to have quite a good following and we appreciate them reaching out to us. Saw them perform at Burning Man years ago. We receive their announcements and admire the quality and aesthetic vigor of their work.”
A History of Visionary Culture
Having first met in 1975 at the Museum school, Alex and Allyson formed a strong bond and soon embarked on “sacramental journeys” through mind-altering substances. For five years, Alex worked in the Anatomy department at Harvard Medical School, preparing cadavers for dissection while he studied the body on his own. He would later study under Dr. Herbert Benson and Dr. Joan Borysenko as a research technologist at Harvard’s department of Mind/Body medicine, where he conducted scientific experiments to investigate subtle healing energies. This training led Alex to prepare for painting his iconic “Sacred Mirrors,” series and later doctors at Harvard saw this work which led to Grey’s hiring as a medical illustrator.
Alex Grey’s signature series of 21 life-sized paintings, dubbed, “The Sacred Mirrors,” presents viewers with a journey toward their own divine nature by examining in detail the body, mind, and spirit. Started in 1979, they would take ten years to complete and would go on to be universally acclaimed. They have been incorporated into the teachings of international spiritual leaders including Deepak Choprah, as well as in pop culture as they have been used as memorable album art for notable bands like Nirvana, TOOL and the Beastie Boys. The large format art book, “Sacred Mirrors: The Visionary Art of Alex Grey” was published in 1990 and has been translated into five languages and gone on to sell over 150,000 copies. In Grey’s most recent book, “Net of Being,” he showed how his visionary art is evolving the cultural body through icons of interconnectedness. It is just one of many iconic images Alex Grey has created that has resulted in a myriad of different uses – from apparel and jewelry to tattoos and music videos.
Connecting at Lightning in a Bottle
As Alex and Allyson Grey come to the Lucent Temple of Consciousness at LiB this year, they have lovingly put together a very special group workshop, entitled, “Entheogeneration: History of Visionary Culture,” where they will impart their vast visionary knowledge that has been carefully culled throughout the years onto attendees, who are encouraged t come with a completely open mind and heart.
“We will all teach each other,” the Greys previewed of their workshop. ”The Body and Soul Drawing meditation is a ritual in which we experience art as a spiritual practice, an arena to visualize the subtle light body. Observing the model yoginis that will be posing for us during the Drawing Ritual, we will visualize the vital life-force of the seven chakras. A discussion of the history of visionary art will illuminate the venerable tradition of depicting the light body, the focus of our group session.”
As for what the Greys ultimately hope people will take from their time together at the Lucent Temple of Consciousness?
“Make creative expression a daily practice,” the Greys offered. ”Bring beauty into the world in the service of love. Dance, art, music, film, A/V, theatre, poetry, screenplays, books, videos, performances are all opportunities to inspire and uplift a beleaguered world.”
